Janelle

Janelle is an adjunct professor in the Applied Mathematics Department at the University of Waterloo. She completed her Applied Mathematics PhD in 2019. Janelle worked on a multidisciplinary project involving physics (wave motion and signal analysis), applied mathematics (gasdynamics) and computer science (numerical methods - discontinuous Galerkin numerical method (DGM)). For her thesis, she studied and attempted to accurately model the timbre of musical notes produced on the trumpet and trombone and studied the associated acoustic behaviours of both instruments.

Janelle is also very passionate about teaching and STEM education. She has been a sessional instructor at the University of Waterloo since 2011 and at the University of Toronto since 2020. Janelle has done post-secondary curriculum development with a focus on incorporating extended reality devices, as well as STEM consulting for both the private and public sector.

Janelle is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Π∩ϟ. She formed Π∩ϟ with her partner in life and science after participating in the Big Data VR Challenge hosted by Wellcome Trust and Epic Games where her team was tasked with using Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) to visualize and interrogate large genomics datasets in VR. After her husband underwent cancer treatment throughout 2018, Π∩ϟ shifted their full attention to developing advanced medical diagnostic tools and researching next-generation technologies.
